For those who haven’t had the pleasure of meeting me yet, my name is Paul Ballenger. And let me tell you, I am as surprised as many as I stand here today outside the DPS building announcing my candidacy for the Denver School Board At-Large seat. I am a marine veteran, a reserve army officer, a businessman, a security expert, and a dedicated father, but it is the recent observations of the issues faced by the DPS schools and students that affirmed my unwavering commitment to embark on the running for this seat. It is the future of our children and their education that fuels my passion for this campaign.

When my daughter and I moved to Denver, we were grateful that she secured a spot in a wonderful school. But despite her initial happiness and academic success, there were concerns that lingered in the back of our minds. Discipline issues and a prevailing sense of insecurity were present, unlike anything we had experienced before. I voiced my worries to the administration, hoping for immediate action, only to realize that their hands were tied. It was disheartening to witness a lack of responsiveness from our district leadership, who we believed to be the experts in ensuring the safety and well-being of our children.

Then, everything changed on March 22nd. That day became a turning point, an awakening to the glaring gaps in our school system’s safety policies. The truth hit hard, as I discovered that none of our children were truly safe within our schools. The discipline matrix, meant to establish order and security, was proving ineffective. It was a wake-up call, a realization that our educators, principals, and school staff had been sounding the alarm for years, only to be ignored. Our schools were failing them, setting them up for potential disaster.

This realization propelled me to delve deeper into the operations of the Denver Public School Board. I studied their positions, agendas, and actions. And what I found was deeply concerning. There was a clear lack of effective execution of their public duties, and a disconnect from the urgent needs of our children. This revelation was not mine alone, as thousands of parents, students, educators, and community groups united, demanding accountability and change. We could no longer tolerate such negligence.

As I assessed the dire situation, it became evident that Denver Public Schools was in crisis. And in this moment, I knew that I couldn’t stand idly by. With my leadership skills and problem-solving expertise honed over the years, I am uniquely positioned to make a difference. I am determined to restore trust and ensure that every parent in Denver can rest easy, knowing their child is receiving a quality education within a safe and supportive environment.

My campaign is rooted in strategic priorities that directly address the pressing issues facing our schools. We need comprehensive safety policies that leave no aspect of security unattended, from facility security and emergency preparedness to prevention of bullying, harassment, and violence. Safety must become the district’s number one priority, and we must provide standard services and resources across all schools while empowering individual schools to tailor safety measures to their unique needs.

Additionally, I will prioritize the assessment and improvement of physical security measures. This includes leveraging my experience in security to implement effective use of the district and the City’s resources, bolster our safety department with proper funding and leadership, implement access control systems, and conduct regular safety audits. Facility security must be continuous and garner support at all levels, and it starts with appointing a qualified Director of Safety. 

Finally, I am committed to empowering our school leaders and providing the support and resources needed for our teachers, administrators, and support personnel. By equipping them with the necessary resources and capabilities to respond effectively to safety threats and emergencies and the ability to escalate as needed, we create a safe and supportive learning environment where educators can focus on educating, rather than acting as de facto security personnel.

When a reporter recently mentioned to me that the entire city was in agreement on one thing – that the Denver Public School Board is failing us – I couldn’t help but resonate with this observation. It is disheartening to witness a board that seems detached from the pressing issues our students and schools face. As a concerned parent, community member, and advocate for education, I firmly believe that the school board has a pivotal role in ensuring the safety, success, and well-being of our children. We cannot simply pass the responsibility onto other entities; we must take ownership and strive for solutions. It is time for a change, for a board that listens, acts, and truly represents the needs of our community. Together, we can rebuild trust, restore competence, and rekindle the hope that our schools are places of inspiration, growth, and security.

Denver, the time for change is now. We must reclaim our schools from the grip of fear and frustration. The Denver School Board is failing us, but we have the power to correct that course. It is not just the responsibility of the Mayor, the police chief, or the City Council. We must hold our School Board accountable, demand action, and provide the support and resources necessary to create a safe and thriving educational system.

As I embark on this journey, I want to assure the community of Denver that I am fully committed to listening and engaging with all stakeholders. This summer, I will dedicate my time to meeting with parents, students, teachers, administrators, community leaders from various ethnic and cultural backgrounds and all those who have a stake in our schools’ success. I believe that the power to bring about meaningful change lies within our collective voices and experiences. By actively listening to the concerns, ideas, and aspirations of the diverse members of our community, I can better understand the unique needs of each school and develop comprehensive strategies that address those needs effectively. Many told me that their voices have not been listened to, I promise I WILL listen to your community’s needs and use my trained background and leadership skills to develop policies that reflect our community’s needs.

I pledge to work tirelessly to ensure we bring all community members together towards our common goal of delivering a first world education system for all of our kids in DPS. 

Together, we can ensure that our children receive a quality education, free from fear and violence. As a proud member of this community, I am ready to work tirelessly to restore faith in our Board of Education and make Denver a model for excellence in education. Join me in this journey, and let us create a brighter future for our children—one where education takes center stage, and safety is an inherent right for every student.

Denver, let us rise above the challenges and make a resounding statement: Enough is enough. 

Our children deserve better, and I am committed to delivering it.

Buenos días, para aquellos que aún no me conocen, mi nombre es Paul Ballenger. Para aquellos que me conocen, lo sé…estoy tan sorprendido como ustedes de verme hoy aquí. Después de todo, soy militar, empresario, experto en seguridad y padre de una niña estupenda. Cuando mi hija y yo nos movimos a Denver, estábamos agradecidos que atendiera una burna escuela. Ella estaba contenta y mejoraba académicamente, sin embargo, desde el principio expresó su preocupación por la disciplina y por sentirse segura en comparación a con otros distritos en los que estudió anteriormente. Comuniqué mis preocupaciones a la administración y rápidamente me di cuenta de que tenían las manos atadas. Los profesores y el personal me aseguraron que las cosas mejorarían y que tuviera paciencia. Como padre y ser humano – eso es simplemente inaceptable. Empecé a prestar atención a nuestra Junta Escolar, leí más profundamente sobre sus posturas y sus agendas pudiéndome dar cuenta de que no estaban ejecutando sus deberes públicos, a la vez de que estaban mal informados sobre las necesidades de nuestros hijos. Y no era el único que pensaba así. Miles de padres, estudiantes, educadores y grupos comunitarios empezaron a alzar su voz exigiéndo responsabilidades y medidas. Ni siquiera los medios de comunicación, que trabajan en un ciclo de noticias de 24 horas, podían hacer la vista gorda ante una negligencia tan evidente. He llegado a comprender que las propias Escuelas Públicas de Denver están en crisis, y ha quedado claro que estoy en una posición única para ayudar en este momento y estoy dispuesto a poner mis dotes de liderazgo y de resolución de problemas al servicio de la comunidad de Denver. Por encima de todo, quiero que los padres de Denver estén preocupados por si sus hijos están en peligro, sino que tengan la plena confianza de que sus hijos está prosperando dentro de nuestro sistema escolar. Entonces, ¿qué significa todo esto? Significa que quiero lograr que las reuniones del Consejo Escolar vuelvan a ser aburridas. Quiero volver a los días en los que se revisan los presupuestos, donde se renuevan los contratos y donde se toman decisiones difíciles con el aporte de la comunidad. Quiero que todo el mundo confíe en que aquellos miembros del Consejo que han sido elegidos están ahí porque quieren hacer lo correcto para los niños. Quiero que el Consejo sea tan competente que nadie recuerde mi nombre dentro de 5 años, sino que sus hijos fueron felices y estuvieron seguros y sin miedo. Y tal vez, entonces, podamos volver a hablar de educación. Como director de la Junta Escolar, voy a aprovechar mis habilidades de liderazgo y experiencia para limitar las luchas internas que se han mantenido a nuestra Junta, y nuestro Superintendente rehén por la mayor parte de 3 años. Utilizaré mis dos décadas de experiencia asegurando activos militares e instalaciones privadas para limitar las amenazas a las que nuestros niños se enfrentan actualmente en una cultura cada vez más violenta. Voy a trabajar para capacitar a los líderes escolares, para que puedan tomar decisiones que se alinean con los valores y necesidades de sus comunidades. Escucharé, aprenderé y me dejaré la piel para asegurarme de que todos los niños en DPS reciban una educación pública gratuita y justa en el entorno más seguro posible. Hace poco, un periodista me comentó que toda la ciudad estaba de acuerdo en una cosa: que el Consejo de Escuelas Públicas de Denver nos está fallando. Dijo que nunca había visto nada igual, y tengo que estar de acuerdo. Somos una ciudad unida por el miedo y la frustración. Se ha dicho que el consejo escolar no puede hacer nada contra la violencia armada dentro o fuera del campus. Que es cosa del alcalde, del jefe de policía y del ayuntamiento. No podría estar más en desacuerdo. Podemos escuchar cuando los profesores, los directores y los agentes de policía advierten de un peligro inminente. Podemos, y debemos, hacer algo más que encogernos de hombros cuando leemos estos informes. Si un profesor pide ayuda, si un niño necesita intervención, debemos proporcionársela. En este momento no estamos satisfaciendo las necesidades de nadie: estamos fallándole a todos. En 1941 Roosevelt dijo que liberarse del miedo es un derecho humano básico, y yo estoy de acuerdo con él. Por eso me alisté en el ejército en 2000, para que nuestros conciudadanos estadounidenses pudieran seguir disfrutando de las libertades que proporciona la seguridad nacional. Y por eso estoy dispuesto a formar parte de un consejo que se enfrenta a problemas increíblemente difíciles, para que ustedes puedan estar tranquilos sabiendo que un líder competente y capacitado está al mando, o al menos en la sala. Desde el 22 de marzo, no nos hemos librado del miedo. Nos ahogamos en él y exigimos un cambio. Dicho esto, nada romperá mi determinación. Hay mucho por hacer, y estoy seguro de que yo, Paul Ballenger, traeré cambios en los que ustedes puedan creer a las Escuelas Públicas de Denver. Esta es nuestra comunidad, este es nuestro distrito. Nuestras escuelas deben ser una fuente de orgullo, no una fuente de división y ciertamente no una fuente de violencia armada. Ya es suficiente. Seguro que tienen preguntas, ¡vamos allá!
